códices II - Juan Campoverde

Códices I and II are works based on recordings that Juan Campoverde made of Pre-Columbian objects and instruments (lithophones and aerophones) found in what is now Ecuador, and dating in some instances to the Formative Period (3500-1800 BCE). In addition to being a contextualized source of sonorities and information, these recordings and the works that emerge, in one way or another from them, embody a form of creative speculation that connects Juan’s creative vision with a distant past, searching for resonances and traces that could enrich and expand our ways of listening and understanding, as well as our sensibilities.

As Juan puts it:

“As an independent piece Códices i does not exist by itself. It lives, fragmented and scattered, both as actual sounds (digitally manipulated and presented as fixed media), and as sound-based information (spectral and frequency analysis), in several of my solo and ensemble works from the last two decades. Códices ii (2022), gathers this ongoing creative research into a series of twelve multi-channel miniatures (here presented in a stereo reduction), each lasting not longer that 70 seconds and connected through measured silences.”

Juan Campoverde Q. is an Ecuadorian-American composer whose creative vision and work enriches the panorama of contemporary music by expanding our appreciation of the diversity of recent Latin American music and thought. His music has been presented in the Americas and in Europe by recognized soloists and ensembles. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches to composition as well as recent Latin American music and cultural studies are Campoverde Q.’s areas of interest and research.
